1970 12 Hours of Sebring film - Click above to watch video after the jump
If we had a time machine, we'd set it for 1970 and never look back. And once we landed, bought some new threads and scored one of the amazing cars in production at the time, we'd road trip it to Sebring so we could see that year's 12-hour enduro in person. Why? Because as good as modern sports car racing is, Sebring '70 is special. From the cars and drivers (a who's-who of legends including Mario Andretti, Jo Siffert, Pedro Rodriguez, Dan Gurney, Henri Pescarolo, and yes, Steve McQueen, who co-drove his Porsche 908 with Peter Revson despite having his broken left foot in a cast at the time), to the the overall atmosphere, Sebring, Florida on March 21, 1970 was very much the place to be.
Sadly, there's no time machine to take us back there, but there was a brilliant race documentary made of the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring. Follow the jump to see the story play out in five parts. Unfortunately, the embedded YouTube clips don't include the film's seven-minute intro section. But that's okay, because you can catch that part over at the State Library and Archives of Florida, which has the 22-minute movie posted in its entirety.
So, follow the jump and see the drama unfold as the Gulf-Porsche 917s battle the Ferrari 512S trio led by Andretti while McQueen and Revson try to pull off an unimaginable upset. Forty years after the checkered flag dropped, this is still an absurdly exciting and entertaining race to watch, even if you already know its storybook ending. We've known that a refreshed Jeep Compass is on the horizon for the 2011 model year, and we've even seen a few heavily camouflaged spy shots of prototypes running around. That said, we haven't been able to judge the scope of the redesign until reader Adam M. sent in this snapshot of a flotilla of undisguised testers.
Even with the grainy quality of this spy photo and the unflattering light, it's easy to see that Jeep has authored a substantial refresh that leverages the styling language of its handsome new Grand Cherokee.
Forsaking the outgoing model's round-light, drop-shouldered look in favor of a boxier and more traditional front clip instantly gives the new Compass a more serious and polished appearance. Gone is the awkwardly styled triangular bumper cap, and in its place is a more organic form with round outboard foglamps and what looks to be a small horizontal breather slat below the chrome-lipped seven-slot grille. The squared-off headlamps look like they wrap around a bit, and they clearly have more elements and definition than the outgoing model's historically minded 'lantern eyes.' There also appears to be a nice power bulge in the hood, although it's impossible to know at this point whether that's just a design element or an engineering necessity because we don't know what lurks underhood.
We only have this one spy shot to go on, so we can't really make out what additional work has been done to clean up the Compass' profile and greenhouse, or its rear-end. We're guessing that since it isn't expected to be a clean-sheet redesign that the rump will look much like it does on the 2010 model, albeit with different taillamps and revised lower fascia.
No word, too, on what's gone on in the cabin of this new model, but we've seen some very positive signs from Auburn Hills' designers of late, what with significant material upgrades and cleaner looking surfaces in other Jeep products including the refreshed Patriot (with which the Compass shares the lion's share of its greasy bits) and the 2011 Wrangler, so it seems reasonable to expect similar improvements. For what it's worth, the latest Patriot didn't get any new powertrains.
If Jeep can manage to clean up the interior half as well as it appears to have edited the Compass' front end, it ought to be a much more compelling vehicle all-around than its lackluster predecessor. Thanks for the pic, Adam M!

2012 Hyundai Sonata (i40) wagon spy shots - Click above for high-res image gallery
While Hyundai has yet to unveil a wagon derivative of its Sonata/i40 family sedan, copious spy shots have been captured while the car has been undergoing testing around the globe. The load-lugging Korean is a lock for Europe and will doubtlessly surface in other markets, but to date, there has been no word as to whether the wagon will haul itself into U.S. showrooms.
While there's still no official word from Hyundai, Autoblog has learned that American executives definitely want the car and are working to build a business case for it. Further, according to our source:
Despite Volvo and Subaru recently giving up the U.S. wagon segment in favor of lifted, more crossover-like two-boxers, we still see a clear area of opportunity for a large, stylish and fuel-efficient wagon. As we've recently proven, hatchbacks and wagons sell in better numbers than many automakers would seem to give the bodystyles credit for, and we suspect that with the new Sonata's rocket-like sales trajectory, adding a second format would help them close the gap with their Japanese rivals. And while we'd love to see an affordable base model, the smart money suggests that Hyundai would have a better chance of profiting from a Sonata wagon if it were to launch with a single, higher-margin upscale model - a loaded 2.0-liter turbo, say."We can't comment on future product plans. But we certainly are aware of the upsurge in popularity of well-executed wagons, especially in markets like Europe where consumers demand the high degrees of versatility and fuel economy that wagons deliver. Hyundai's eagerly anticipated Sonata 2.0T model has just begun hitting U.S. showrooms, but a small quality issue that cropped up in the first batch of cars is causing some consternation. Conversations have been popping up on internet forums about the issue, and there has been some confusion as to the nature of the problem as well as questions about whether or not a stop-sale has been ordered by the company.
A small rubber hose that feeds oil to the turbo unit in very early 2011 Sonata Turbo models was apparently built to the wrong specification and needs replacement. According to a few user forum reports, some dealers haven't been allowing customers to test drive the vehicles until the correct part has been fitted. Additionally, at least one of the first 2.0T owners informed Autoblog that his dealer actually flat-bedded his car back for service. However, Hyundai officials tell Autoblog that this issue affects very few units, and they want to make it clear that no stop-sale has been issued.
Hyundai spokesman Dan Bedore:
Hyundai says it only sold around 30 units before the hose problem was discovered, and the company has only built around 1,000 units in total, most of which are still in transit to dealers. All new Sonata turbos rolling off of assembly lines are being fitted with the new part, and all new models sold will have the correct hose installed."In about 30 cases, we had to get with customers who already had their cars. We're using the new hose in production and have finished retrofitting those that were built but not sold. We asked dealers to replace the hose before delivery but didn't issue a stop sale. No lost sales, no big disruption, the customer comes first - that's business as usual for Hyundai.
Hyundai's Sonata line has been an extremely strong seller since its introduction earlier this year, quickly moving the Korean automaker into third place in the hotly contested family sedan segment. However, the Sonata has also suffered some early teething problems, including the recall of 1,300 units over a possible door latch malfunction in March and the recall of 139,500 units over steering problems in late October. But as with Daltrey's Who, the C63 is a fantastically overachieving beast of rather pedestrian roots, and when it comes down to it, adding the Dev Pack promises to be like dropping off Pete Townshend in the brand-new lobby of a mid-'60s Holiday Inn. With a set of Marshall stacks. Drunk and fresh off a painful breakup. In other words, it might not make a whole lot of sense or be a particularly wise financial decision, but it's also a brave call with the glorious potential for unbridled mayhem.

Following the second press day at the Paris Motor Show at a drive event in Southern France, Ford's global vice president of marketing, Jim Farley, let slip to Autoblog that Dearborn decisionmakers are mulling over whether to import the C-Max to the U.S. As you'll recall, Ford has already committed to bringing over the C-Max's larger line mate, the seven-seat Grand C-Max, a vehicle that Farley tells us won't hit American soil until early in calendar 2012 (likely as a 2013 model).
Unlike its bigger brother, the C-Max has conventional front-hinged rear doors (the Grand has a pair of sliders) along with a more aggressive roofline and rear graphic to complement its shorter wheelbase. Think of it as more of a pent-roof Focus wagon and less of a smallish minivan in the mold of the Mazda5 and you've got it.
Interestingly, Farley maintains that Ford won't necessarily wait until the Grand C-Max goes on sale in the U.S. to determine whether or not to bring the model to America, and it will actively solicit feedback from both journalists and consumers to see if there's a business case to be made. While such language is common among PR folks looking to assuage media members always clamoring for the importation of forbidden automotive fruit, Farley sounded quite optimistic. Further, he reminded us that there was "absolutely no plan" initially to market the next-gen five-door Focus in the States, but that all changed after the 2007 Verve concept was met with an enthusiastic response from media members and show goers. A few years ago, we probably would have discounted such talk, but with CEO Alan Mulally and product chief Derrick Kuzak pushing the One Ford agenda globally, who knows? It might just make it Stateside after all.
If Ford does decide to bring the C-Max to America, it may have a minor naming conundrum to deal with. At the moment, the Grand C-Max moniker is expected to be shortened to just 'C-Max' when it goes on sale in the U.S., or the MPV might take on the name 'Focus C-Max,' though a final decision has not yet been made. As the Blue Oval won't sell both models with the same name, the five-door model would ostensibly need a different name.

In the span of two weeks, Mercedes-Benz announced two new CLS-based production models: the recently revealed CLS63 AMG and plans to produce a wagon version inspired by the CLS "Shooting Brake" Concept shown at the Beijing Motor Show. Now we've learned that another CLS variant could combine the two.
The CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake would adapt all the go-fast bits of its sedan counterpart into the five-door model set to go into production in 2012. That means the M157 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 putting out between 518 and 550 horsepower and up to 590 pound-feet of torque depending on the spec. We've yet to get official word from M-B if the CLS Shooting Brake is bound for U.S. shores, but if the AMG version does come to fruition, don't expect it much before 2013.
Additionally, AMG execs told us that diesel performance models from the in-house tuner are a long way off. More to the point, AMG officials believe that gasoline engines have the potential to return just as much torque and fuel economy as their oil-burning counterparts, negating the need to develop high performance diesels. Here's hoping they're right...

If you've used one of the athletic apps for the iPhone, you're probably familiar with the feature that matches the music to your workout. You run faster, the system ups the BPM. Cycle slower and the tempo drops. Mini wants to do something similar with the Mini Connected system, and that's just the tip of the interactive infotainment iceberg.
Mini Connected is the automaker's integrated music and navigation system, which connects to a smattering of smartphones to stream music and data to the stereo. However, the iPhone and iPod are currently more deeply integrated into the system, including the introduction of the new iPod out functionality which displays Apple's music player controls on the Mini's center-mounted screen. But that's nothing new and Mini wants to go deeper, so it's releasing the Mini Connected iPhone/iPod touch app to increase the interaction.
The headlining Dynamic Music function plays tunes that have been exclusively composed for Mini and then adjusts the rhythm based on your driving style. Additionally, a web radio function allows users to listen to local radio stations independent of their location, and the app can be programmed to read RSS news feeds, supply Google local searches and send information from your browser to the Cooper's display. Facebook and Twitter integration will also be included, while the "Minimalism Analyzer" provides advice on how to drive more efficiently.
Mini hasn't outlined a timeframe on when the new app will be released, but it's a few steps above and beyond what's on offer from Ford's Sync system - assuming it works as seamlessly as advertised. The one drawback: it's currently only for Apple users, so Android, Blackberry, PalmOS and - any day now - Windows Phone 7 users are out in the cold for the time being. Grand Cherokee lifts Jeep, Toyota falls hard
After a couple days of delay, sales numbers for the month of October are finally in, and most automotive brands earned a treat instead of a trick.
The majority of brands for sale in the U.S. achieved an increase in sales versus the same month last year, and of those, the majority posted a double-digit gain in sales. Jeep pulled off a triple-digit sales gain, seeing volume rise an incredible 111 percent thanks to the new Grand Cherokee, sales of which rose from a scant 3,256 units last October to an impressive 12,721 this October.
The biggest surprise is Toyota joining the cellar dwellers with a 6.2-percent drop in sales. Despite an 8-percent rise in sales, Lexus and its relatively low sales volume couldn't save the company as Toyota as a whole fell 4.4 percent.
*Brands and companies are displayed in descending order according to their percentage change in volume sales. There were 27 selling days in October 2010 versus 28 selling days in October 2009, so the change in monthly sales volume will be different than the change average daily sales rate (DSR) for each brand/company.

Pop quiz: Where's the slot to swap out DVD map discs for the 2010 Subaru Legacy's navigation system? No, it's not the one you can see with your eyes in the image above; that's the slot for audio CDs. The DVD drive is hidden. Answer: behind that blue plastic panel located directly beneath the CD slot.
Since the nav system in the 2010 Subaru legacy doesn't contain an entire atlas of North America on an internal hard drive, you'll sometimes have to change the map disc if where you're headed is on a different disc. I discovered this when having to make the trek from Ohio to Michigan because maps for the Wolverine State were on a different region disc than the one that was already loaded.
The manual, of course, makes the process of popping off this panel seem easy. Put your thumb on the top of the panel and lift the panel up from the bottom. In reality, the nearly invisible recess at the bottom of the panel is blocked by the buttons below it, and unless you have long and particularly strong fingernails, the tight-fitting pane is not coming off without some outside assistance. A pocket knife would work best, but all I had at the time was a small key. Since I didn't want to scratch the aforementioned buttons, I tried lifting the panel off a little to the right of the recess. With much effort and a grunt for good measure, the panel came flying off the console.
Most people won't be swapping map discs very often, as each one contains a large chunk of the country in which to navigate. But even if I had the fingernail length required for the job, I still wouldn't like having to pop off a cheap panel to do it.
