2009-Dodge-Ram Chrysler's deal with Nissan to share development of upcoming models has been canceled. The partnership would have provided Chrysler with its first small car since becoming independent from German conglomerate Daimler in 2007. That car was supposed to be based on Nissan's relatively pleasant small Versa, itself based on a Renault platform. In exchange, Chrysler would have produced a full-sized pickup truck for Nissan based on the Dodge Ram, which likely would have replaced the aging Titan.
 
The car could have been a shot in the arm for the ailing U.S. automaker, which today has not a single model reliable enough and with good enough performance for us to recommend. Without a version of the Versa to fill the gap, Chrysler will have to wait for a Fiat-based design in order to offer a small car larger than the tiny Fiat 500. Fiat is reportedly working on other small and midsized vehicles that promise to further revitalize and balance Chrysler's truck-heavy product portfolio.
 
With a dated lineup, Chrysler will face marketplace challenges until this happens. The next new models in their pipeline are the Grand Cherokee SUV and the updated Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger large sedans.  The disbanded alliance with Nissan means that new small cars from Chrysler will have a longer wait.

Cars vs houses - What consumes more energy?

Car-traffic-at-night With all the national focus on migrating to electric cars and other alternative fuels, many consumers would likely say yes. But according to official statistics from the Energy Information Agency (EIA), more petroleum is burned in heating homes and producing electricity for home consumption than in the cars consumers drive.
 
Counting the overall energy demand for use in homes, versus cars in 2008, the EIA estimates U.S. consumers use 21,637 trillion btus of energy in their homes, versus 16,765 btus in their cars. So consumers use about 30 percent more energy used in their homes than their car. (These numbers don't include diesel fuel or commercial energy usage.)
 
The numbers point out that consumers can make a bigger difference in saving energy by insulating doors and windows, buying energy efficient appliances, and installing programmable thermostats, for example, than by buying the latest hybrid car.

Preview: 2011 Hyundai Tucson

2011-Hyundai-Tucson Hyundai pulled the covers off its redesigned Tucson small SUV in Korea this week, previewing the second-generation model scheduled to make its Stateside introduction this fall at the Los Angeles auto show. The new Tucson will be built at Hyundai's Alabama assembly plant, probably by year's end.
 
Expected to again slot just a notch below the Hyundai Santa Fe in size and price, the new Tucson has radically different styling than the outgoing model, with cleaner, more dynamic lines akin to other recent Hyundai vehicles. The hood slopes down, the fender flares are flattened, and the triangular rear quarter windows taper to a point facing aft.

Interior space is about the same as before, and we expect reasonably high levels of fit and finish. The engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder like that in the Sonata sedan, where it makes 175 hp, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. That engine replaces the outgoing Tucson's 2.0-liter four-cylinder as well as its fuel-thirsty 2.7-liter V6. Both front- and all-wheel-drive versions will be available. True to Hyundai's lots-for-the-money marketing strategy, uplevel Tucsons will offer leather upholstery, a navigation system, keyless ignition with push-button start, and other premium touches. A redesigned version of the Tucson's cousin, the Kia Sportage, is expected to follow soon after.

Editor's note: As the new college year revs up, Consumer Reports Money Blog devotes several days to the personal finance issues of college students. Here, Nicole Willis, one of our college-age summer interns, muses on what she's learned–and has yet to learn–about financial independence:

Child on bike parents help with finances My four-and-a-half year ride through college, financially, consisted of both my dad's hand gripping the back of my bicycle seat and my mom holding onto one of my handlebars. While I moved out of my family's suburban Orlando house and onto my large university's campus, I was only seven miles away and visited home at least weekly for my dad's asparagus and pine nut pasta. While I did my own laundry, I did it at home in a twenty-first century front-loading machine without quarters. And when it came to my finances, I was very laissez-faire: my parents not only funded everything (except my car's gas and the occasional night out, for your information) but they kept track of everything that needed to be paid for: my tuition, my sorority bills, car insurance, cell phone bill, etc. My tuition and textbooks were taken care of, however, by the Florida Prepaid College Program and by a scholarship I received in high school.

The only time I interacted with money-related acronyms in high school and college was when I was recently hired for a new job, which occurred about once a year since I was 16. When eagerly filling out the preliminary paperwork, any and all forms with a bold W or I on the top instantly turned my eagerness into a bowl of mashed potatoes. But I luckily recalled my dad telling me upon getting my first job to put a "1" at the bottom, and I was OK.

Needless to say, I still have much to learn about being financially independent. I need to be tutored in all that's involved in paying for grad school, finding my own health insurance, saving for my retirement…the mashed potatoes feeling is coming on again. I currently have a part-time job to return to in Orlando in the fall, and am actively seeking that first full-time job for when I'll be an alumna in January. I just have to remember "1" for when that next first day comes.

Papa-john-1971-camaro There's good news for Camaro owners who chose not to trade in their classic rides for "cash for clunkers" deal on a Chevy Aveo. Today, and today only, they can get free a pizza at any Papa John's restaurant just for showing up in their Camaros.
 
Papa John's founder John Schnatter is passing out the pies to celebrate being reunited with his own Camaro, a 1971 Z28 he sold in 1983 for $2,800 to raise cash for his then fledgling business. John says he never gave up hope of finding his beloved Camaro again, which he said was the only asset he had back in the day that could help make his business dreams come true.
 
The strategy has clearly paid off, and even been successful enough to finance reuniting Schnatter with his car. A Web site was set up to promote the search and let people post leads, and Schnatter took his act on a nationwide tour to promote the cause. After all that, a few months, a $250,000 check to the current owner, and a $25,000 finders fee to the previous owners who helped locate the car, Schnatter got his car back.
 
Fortunately for him, the Camaro had passed through just two other owners in the last quarter century, and rather than deteriorating into dust, was looking pretty good. In fact, it had been spending some time on the show circuit and been upgraded to 825hp for drag racing.. 
 
Now, John wants to celebrate with other Camaro owners with free pizza. It may not be a $4,500 CARS credit, but you do get to keep your car. And he'll even throw in one topping of your choice. Just don't expect the 825-hp Camaro to be pressed into quick delivery service.

Cash for clunkers: The final results

Final numbers are in for the so-called "cash for clunkers" program, and by most measures, the program looks like a roaring success:
 
  • 690,114 cars were purchased under the program; two-thirds of those bought by consumers were passenger cars
  • The average rebate was $4,170.18, for a total of $2.878 billion. The rest of the $3 billion budget will cover administrative expenses.
  • The average new car bought with the rebates got 9.2 mpg more than the average clunker traded in, for an annual average fuel savings per driver of 277 gallons of fuel or about $720.
  • The Department of Transportation credits the program with saving 42,000 jobs in the auto industry and says it expects those jobs will be sustainable, because automakers have ramped up production to meet the clunkers demand.
  • Notably, 690,114 older cars were taken off the road, including 450,778 SUVs and other light trucks that likely lacked electronic stability control and other modern safety equipment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has estimated that making ESC standard on new cars would save as many as 10,000 lives a year. This program has taken a significant step toward that goal.
 
The program closed to new transactions Monday night, and dealers had until last night to enter all their paperwork for reimbursement. For more the effects of the cash for clunkers program, check out our earlier blog.

Car tires: All-season and winter tire ratings are coming soon

Tire-testing-malibu Many astute readers who commonly visit Tires & tire-talk forum are aware that it's almost time to release our new tire ratings. And this year we have an extensive list of new tire models. To be exact, 69 new models were tested and rated.  The tire test results will be included in the November issue of Consumer Reports. (See our current car tire buying advice and ratings.) 
 
The new report will include 23 models of standard all-season (primarily T-speed rated) tires, 29 H- and V-speed rated performance all-season tires, and 17 winter tires.
 
Last year we promised to shorten the test cycle to provide major updates every three years rather than four and five years that were customary before. The three-year cycle covers three major categories: standard car tires, ultra performance tires, and truck tires.  And as the cycle goes, last year we tested truck tires, this year is car tires, and next year expect to see a report on ultra high performance tires. Here's a glimpse of the tire models you can expect to see in the November issue, as well as online in October.

2009-ice-tire-testingWe tested all tires in the popular P215/60R16 size. Our tire-test cars included a 2008 and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. Testing 69 models was no easy task. We purchased 976 tires, mounted and balanced over 360 tires, and performed over 3,200 tire changes at our track, not counting the tires we commission an outside laboratory to test for rolling resistance and tread life. Test preparations started last November and the testing was completed in July. Overall scoring of these tires will include results from dry and wet braking and cornering, snow traction, ice braking, hydroplaning resistance, handling, ride comfort, rolling resistance and tread life.

We are still working on compiling the results. Expect a few surprises as many of the models have never before been tested.

Don't get taken by celebrity memorabilia

The death this week of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy is likely to heighten interest in Kennedy memorabilia. A check of the online auction site eBay turned up many Kennedy items for sale, including newspapers with headlines from the day of his death and books and other items purported to contain his signature.

But whether it's Sen. Kennedy, Michael Jackson, a sports personality, or any other celebrity, use common sense when buying autographed items, personal belongings, or other memorabilia.

If you're buying with the expectation that an item quickly will be worth more than you paid, keep in mind that rarely happens, especially if you agreed to an inflated price to begin with. And don't think that something will appreciate simply because it's advertised as a special edition or that it will be produced in limited quantities.

You also need to be concerned about fakes. It can be very difficult to tell, for example, if a celebrity signature is genuine or if something really belonged to the person. If in doubt, have a third-party expert authenticate the item, especially if it's a big-ticket purchase.

The Better Business Bureau recommends doing your homework and asking a lot of questions before buying.

Also, use a credit card for purchases. That way you can dispute charges for merchandise that's misrepresented or that you don't receive. If you pay by check, debit card, or cash, it could be much more difficult, if not impossible, to get a refund.

Preferably, buy from a reputable dealer. Find out of the company has a BBB report.  Be careful of people you don't know who are selling items through online auction sites. - Anthony Giorgianni

Gas_pump right way to use debit cards There are many things I've learned about my personal finances since leaving the comfort of my parents' house. One of these is that a debit card is not invincible. Thankfully, I have never lost my debit card nor been a victim of debit-card fraud. But with issues arising in a greater frequency regarding debit cards, I wish I initially knew about the complications associated with the plastic in my purse. However, through my own personal experience and the opportunity to work at Consumer Reports, I feel that I have a better grasp of the perils of debit cards. The tips I have gathered below are a good start to the essential information that every teenager or new debit card owner should know.

For one, I have learned to monitor my debit card statements electronically. Though it may seem extreme, I like to check my balance every two days or so. That frequency may increase on days when I have made many purchases, such as at the beginning of the school year when I am responsible for buying books and other school essentials. I may check less frequently at other times. Either way, I think careful scrutiny of your account is the best preventive measure. Also, electronic statements are quick, easier to read than mailed statements, and a great way to stay on top of your expenditures.

My work here at Consumer Reports has taught me other helpful ways to protect my debit card. First, Consumer Reports Money Adviser has suggested that consumers not type in their PINs at the gas pump because it allows easier retrieval of your PIN. Who knew! After reading that article, I have started following those instructions and tell my friends to do the same. With all the horror stories about debit cards floating around, this simple alternative makes me feel more secure.

Second, I learned when to report a missing card or fraudulent purchase. One time during school I lost my debit card. I went on a panicked search for it and when it was nowhere to be found, I informed my parents. I didn't inform the bank right away because I hoped it would turn up. Sure enough, it did. However, I wouldn't have known what to do at the time if it went missing. This summer, four years after my receiving a debit card, CRMA taught me the proper procedure: Report any errors or issues with your debit card within two days of noticing the loss. In this time frame, a debit card user has a greater chance of combating the problem. 

Although these helpful suggestions led me on the path to understanding the security of debit cards better, I still wish I knew more. There are probably stacks of written material regarding this issue that I just haven't found the time to look through yet. But I think my experience through mistakes–and working at Consumer Reports–provided a solid start.

The cheapskate's ultimate guide to supermarket savings

Tod's tightwad mug Would you buy dented cans, crushed boxes, and expired products to drastically cut your grocery bills? Apparently, quite a few Americans fed up with the high-price of food are determined to take frugal living to another level.


According to a recent article in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, StarTribune, there's a growing trend among financially  strapped consumers to shop at so-called salvage or surplus stores that sell imperfect packaged goods for as little as half their original price. Some of the salvage sites I visited claimed savings of as much as 90 percent off of everyday prices.

The imperfections vary from dings, dents, and superficial cuts in a carton from to items with wrong, outdated, or misspelled labels. Salvage stores also feature overstocks and seasonal goods that consumers didn't buy, along with  products approaching the end of their shelf life. You might find Halloween candy in November, say, or  Valentine's Day treats in March.

Don't expect to find these castoffs at big supermarkets like Safeway, Kroger, or Publix. Salvage, or discount, grocers are generally community-based independent or  chain stores. One such operator, Anderson's Country Market  in Madison Heights, Va., links to a nationwide directory of salvage and discount grocers on its Web site. Click here for the list. 

Like other salvage grocers, Anderson's doesn't know exactly what will end up on its shelves from one day to the next. Part of the mix depends on the misfortune of others. "Accidents happen, even in the grocery business," Anderson's explains in an FAQ. "If a case of green beans gets dropped, and a couple of cans get bent, those cans (and sometimes the whole case) don't make it to the grocery store shelves. Instead, they are sold to stores, like ours, where we salvage usable products and pass the savings on to you." 

"Our groceries arrive packed in boxes, wrapped and stacked on pallets. We don't know what's in the boxes until we unpack them. It's like a big surprise package! There are some items we get on a regular basis, and we will almost always have in stock (i.e., green beans, Hamburger Helper, BBQ sauce, pasta, etc.). Items that are unusual or somewhat exotic we may see only once or occasionally (i.e., specialty salad dressings, high-end sauces, On The Border Salsa, etc.)."

Salvage groceries must meet the same Federal health and safety regulations as goods sold by major chains, according to Stephanie Kwisnek, a spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration, and operators say they inspect all salvage goods before they go on sale. Still, consumers should carefully check damaged cans, for instance, to make sure they not swollen, which could signal a botulism risk, Kwisnek said.

As for date codes, they're only required by the federal government for baby food and infant formula, and most products should be perfectly safe to consume, even after the "sell by" or "use by" date has passed. The codes usually refer to the date the product is likely to be at peak flavor and quality. Milk , for example, ought to be OK for around seven days after the sell-by date. By contrast, dating for baby food and formula is important for both quality and nutrient retention.

As a rough rule of thumb, the USDA says that high-acid canned  canned foods such as tomatoes, grapefruit, and pineapple can be stored on the shelf for 12 to 18 months; low-acid canned foods -- meat, poultry, fish, and most vegetables -- will keep 2 to 5 years -- if the can remains in good condition and has been stored in a cool, dry place.

Remote controlled car with wireless camera - SendMeRSS

I, as always get bored arround the house. I desided to make a rough version of that car in Home alone 3. The wireless camera I used was a bit dark, so I added a bar of LEDs and a 5mw laser to enable me to judge distances through the camera. I was in a room with a 15", driving the car. Because I dont have a DVR, I mounded a small regular camera aside the wireless one.

remote controlled lego RCX turret - SendMeRSS

Once again, iv'e made a strange machine at West Junior High School's Technology lab. this time, I made a remote controlled turret with my 5mw laser, the same one used on the RC camera car. it was fun to make this one... Do note that i'm using the new wireless controller 1.0 to control this mechanism...
